Tired of calling businesses, only to be put on hold while asking, “Are you open?” or “How much for a dog wash?” So does Google. Hence, the company handed over the task to your AI BFF.
Across the nation, this week, Google completed the rollout of AI-powered business calling in Search, which is like having a polite robot intern who makes awkward phone calls on your behalf.
Here’s how it works: You search for something like “dry cleaners near me” or “pet grooming near New York,” and a little button appears, saying: “Have AI call for you.”
You tap a button, answer a few questions (like your dog’s size or how fast you want service), and then Google’s AI calls the business for you.
It gathers answers quickly and sends you a neat summary.
You don’t have to worry about awkward questions, hold music, or those old phone menus from 2009.
Do keep in mind that Google uses AI. Every call opens with: “Hi, I’m an AI from Google calling on behalf of a user.” So, they would never catch a receptionist unawares.
But Wait, There’s Gemini 2.5 Pro
Not just yet. Google AI put the icing on the cake with the latest Gemini 2.5 Pro.
Paid subscribers to AI Premium and AI Ultra enjoy access to this extra help beyond the calling of local bakeries.
The model excels at deep reasoning, coding, and handling more complex challenges, such as weighing options across 20 travel sites to avoid an Expedia tab explosion.
With DeepSearch, AI never comes up for air, and just might get lost chaining together a couple of hundred queries before coming out with a report that reads like caffeinated librarians with PhDs.
What If You’re a Business?
Here’s a bright side: if you are a business that doesn’t want to hear from Google’s bots, feel free to opt out through your Google Business Profile. But would it be great to let the bots listen in on a few conversations? It’s free advertising.
Why Is Google Doing This?
Search is roaring to life. Now with fierce competitors in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and a bunch more, Google is putting its AI tricks on full display for the crown: Search 2.0: Half search engine, half concierge, and whole socially awkward assistant who never sleeps.
Until now, no AI has called business establishments, asked questions, and sent over the answers without you doing anything except pressing ‘yes.’ The future? Silent, insightful, and slightly robotic phone calls.
